Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof)

The final resting place for some of Austria’s most famous citizens
Word to the wise: If you find yourself in need of a break after exploring the extensive grounds, take a load off at Schloss Concordia, a friendly little restaurant where you can enjoy a meal, a cup of coffee or a simple pastry.

The dead are never alone in Zentralfriedhof, Vienna’s largest cemetery. Established in 1874, the gardens and surrounding walls shelter an astonishing number of graves, monuments and tombstones, numbering more than 300,000.
A stroll across this expansive cemetery, built on the outskirts of Vienna, is not as macabre as you might expect. The artwork and engravings on the tombstones can be quite stunning, and if spending time with the departed sends a chill down your spine, remember that you’re in good company, with famous names like Beethoven (after being exhumed from another cemetery), Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert occupying the earth just below your feet.
