Forts are among the most crucial living symbols of the past and history. Many of these acted as fortifications to safeguard the kingdom and provide security for the rulers. Like every other state, Kerala too has its share of historic forts that narrate tales of the bygone eras. Though many of the forts in Kerala are in bad condition, there are some that still live on gloriously till date.
Mentioned below are some of the most historic forts in Kerala that one must visit on their next trip.
St Angelo Fort, Kannur
St Angelo Fort in Kannur is a hidden gem of Kerala. The fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, who was the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. People also know it as the Kannur Fort, and locals turn up here in large numbers to relax and enjoy on weekends. One can enjoy some magical views of the Arabian Sea and Mappila Bay harbor. The Archaeological Survey of India looks after the maintenance of the fort.
Pallippuram Fort, Ernakulam
Locally known as Ayikotta or AlikottaIt, the Pallippuram Fort in Ernakulam district of Kerala is among the oldest living European forts in India! It was constructed in the year 1503 by the Portuguese in proximity to the Vypin Island. Built in hexagonal shape, the fort attracts people from all over the country.
Palakkad Fort, Palakkad
Also known as Tipu’s Fort, Palakkad Fort was constructed in 1766 by Hyder Ali Khan, the then ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore and father of Tipu Sultan. The state government has preserved the fort well, as it is one of the most visited historic buildings in south India.
Bekal Fort, Kasaragod
This grand fort was built in 1650 by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi. Situated in Kasargod, the fort is spread over 40 ac, which makes it one of the largest forts in Kerala. The fort wins heart with its stunning backdrop of the sea; music created by the waves makes for a perfect romantic setting. Do not miss out on the golden sunset views.
Thalassery Fort, Kannur
A formidable historical monument, the Thalassery Fort in Kannur was built by the East India Company in 1703. Situated in Thalassery, this grand fort has gigantic walls, with massive and intricately carved doors. There are secret tunnels leading to the sea!
