A guide to shopping for Kanchipuram silk sarees in Kanchipuram
TRAVEL NEWS, KANCHIPURAM Updated : Dec 4, 2020, 16:18 IST
Visiting Kanchipuram for sarees’ sake
Kanchipuram or Kanjivaram sarees are believed to be an equivalent to North India’s Banarasi sarees. They are one of the best souvenirs to buy in Kanchipuram. For centuries, Kanchipuram sarees have remained an integral part of bridal trousseau for a typical Tamilian bride. Kanchipuram sari borders look different from the rest of the sarees. They carry motifs of the sun, moon, peacock, chariot, flowers etc.
Beyond sarees
Kanchipuram is also a destination that is known for its ancient and spectacular temples, so include plenty of those in your itinerary. Visit Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple, Kailasnathar Temple, Ekambaranathar Temple and more.
How to go about saree shopping?
Only 21 cooperative silk societies and 10 independent weavers have been given the right to sell authentic Kanchipuram silk sarees in the namesake city. Be sure to check the GI tag that every original Kanchipuram silk saree carries.
The types of Kanchi silks
There are three types of Kanchipuram silks –pure silk and pure zari, pure silk and textile/half-fine/tested zari and polyester/silk mix and pure zari. Therefore, whenever you go out shopping, tell the shop-owner about the kind of Kanchi silk you wish to buy.
Where to go, where not to?
The ideal place to buy Kanchi silks is directly from their place of origin. This place is situated less than two hours from Chennai. Beware of auto or taxi drivers to usher you to a saree shop as it is possible that they take you to a place that gets them commission for bringing customers.
Also, there are several shops in Kanchipuram that might sell fake silk sarees, so research beforehand or ask a trustworthy local to guide you to a good shop.
Cooperative vs commercial stores
Cooperative societies located along Gandhi Road in Kanchipuram saris sell good quality but at a higher price. Commercial stores are mostly located along Gandhi Road and Mettu Street. Although they sell a wider variety, the sarees may not be made with pure zari thread.
