Spread over 26 sq km, Periyar Lake flows through the forest in Periyar Tiger Reserve. It was formed when the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed in 1895. Its clean water and dry submerged trees make it one of the most beautiful sights in Thekkady. Wildlife enthusiasts are strongly recommended to visit Periyar Lake. More so because it is home to many birds and animals. I still remember clicking the big herds of elephants and deer as they were very easy to spot. The best way to experience this lake is to take a boat trip. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation runs five boat trips every day which are almost 2 hours long. If you go during the peak season, I recommend you to book online in advance through the website of Periyar Foundation as you would not want to get frustrated while waiting in long queues. If you are planning to spot birds and some wild animals, then grab a preferred seat by reaching at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the trip as the boat crew is very strict about guests not moving around while they sail. Last but not the least, I was a bit worried thinking what if the vessel collides with one of those submerged trees, but that never happens!
