This island is located off the north eastern end of Singapore and just a short ferry ride away from the Changi ferry terminal. Pulau Ubin houses the last remaining ‘kampung’, a local Malay word for Village, a rare sight in the day and age of rapidly modernizing Singapore. It’s a great way for a quick getaway - hop on a bike for some off-road cycling, or just take a wander around the island - there are old granite quarries and mangrove swamps to explore, or you can make friends with the hundred or so residents who still live in the kampung. A highlight of the island is the Chek Jawa wetlands located on the south-eastern tip of the island, about 40mins walk from the jetty, where you can explore a rich biodiverse habitat, especially intriguing during low tide where the intertidal coasts are exposed. The island is a veritable time capsule for anyone who wants to know what living in Singapore felt like in the 60s. Many locals grab their tents and camp out at the campsites, have a barbeque with their friends and generally have a simple but great time.
