Gurusthan translates into the place where the holy Guru dwells. It is also the place where Sai Baba spent most of his time when he first came to Shirdi, and also where, according to Baba, the tomb of his own guru is located, by the neem tree. According to the legend, when some villagers were digging the earth to lay the foundations for Sathe Wada just behind the neem tree, they came across some bricks in the soil that appeared like the opening of a tunnel. Unsure about proceeding with their job, they sought Baba’s counsel on the matter. Baba asked them to avoid digging further as this was the resting place of his ancestors/Guru, and it would be in their interest to not disturb them. The most amazing feature of the holy neem tree is that its leaves are not bitter, but sweet, and it continues to shower its sweet blessings on the pilgrims even today.
