Shantiniketan
Its history dates back to 1862. Shantiniketan is where Rabindra Nath Tagore began his schooling. Shantiniketan is located in Birbhum district, 162 km from Kolkata. When in Shantiniketan, the Tagore Museum is a must-visit. There are art galleries here that one can enjoy. Shantiniketan is a good place for culturally inclined travellers. Sonajhuri forest in Bolpur, less than 2 km from Shantiniketan, is a beautiful place to spend time with nature.
Digha
One of the most popular beaches of West Bengal, Digha is a favourite of many. The beach destination is 195 km from Kolkata, and is a great place for water sports and seafood. Sunsets are very pretty here.
Roopark Village, Panchalingeswar, Odisha
Roopark Village is a quaint tribal village, far away from the city’s noises. It is approximately 270 km from Kolkata. This village is surrounded by lush forest. Deokund Falls and Simlipal Reserve Forest are very close by. The location is a good birding destination too.
Sundarbans
Do you need a reason to visit the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world? Located 130 km from Kolkata, Sundarbans is a rich tiger habitat. The tour of the mangrove is safe and is one of the most popular things to do around here. You can even take a tour of the mangrove on a boat. When in Sundarbans, do visit the Bhagabatpur Crocodile Sanctuary.
Henry’s Island
Henry’s island is a destination you must visit if you are already visiting the Sundarbans. Another beautiful mangrove forest with rich flora and fauna, Henry’s island is just a short distance from the Sundarbans. Henry’s Island Beach and Henry’s Island Watchtower are some of the attractions you can visit.
Bishnupur
Bishnupur is widely popular for its terracotta monuments and temples. It is located approximately 140 km from Kolkata. Jor Bangla Temple and Lalji Temple are two very famous temples here known for their unique architecture. They are some of the finest examples of terracotta works in the region.
Piyali Island
Piyali island is a kind of untouched getaway in West Bengal. Located just 72 km from Kolkata, it is a great destination for a quick and fun day trip. Piyali Island is also home to many species of birds, a perfect destination for birders and nature lovers.
Jhargram
Located approximately 173 km from Kolkata is the little town of Jhargram, famous for ancient temples, old palaces and beautiful forests. Here, you will find the stunning Chilkigarh Kanak Durga Temple, a must-visit. Nature walk is a fun activity here because of the beautiful forest views.
