Rainbow Falls
A perfect place for an early morning trip, Rainbow Falls is one of the most sought-after destinations to visit in Hilo, Hawaii. The waterfall is located in the Wailuku River, and it falls over a lava cave. This cave is considered to be home to the Hawaiian goddess Hina, who is the Goddess of the Moon. You can view it from close quarters, and take fantastic pictures. The reason why the fall is known as Rainbow Fall is because you can see rainbows if you stand with your back towards the sun.
Mauna Kea Volcano
The tallest volcano in the island of Hawaii, the towering Mauna Kea Volcano is 4207.1544 m high from the ground. The volcano dates back to almost 800,000 years ago, and is currently dormant. Most of it is underwater, and the last time it had erupted was about 3500 years ago. The peak of the volcano is considered to be sacred, much like all other volcano peaks here in Hawaii. Mauna Kea is about 69 km away from the Hilo, and is home to quite a few observatories. It is astoundingly beautiful to say the least, a must visit.
Hilo Farmers Market
The most popular farmers market in Hilo, you can have a great day spending time here at Hilo Farmers Market. There are over 200 local farmers and crafters putting up their stalls here, selling a variety of items for shoppers. At Hilo Farmers Market, it is always a fun and exciting day, with a festive feel to it. A favourite among both locals and travellers, here at Hilo Farmers Market you will find some of the best local produce of Hawaii. Wednesdays and Saturdays are known as the Big Market Days.
Suisan Fish Market
When in Hawaii, do not give seafood a miss! Perhaps the most important place in Hilo for this delicious treat is the Suisan Fish Market. It is a mouth-watering experience, to say the least, you will also get a chance to get up, close, and personal with Hawaii’s fishing community. You can purchase them raw, or you could also get a bowl. Try the poke bowl with rice, which is basically diced raw fish with ingredients. If you want, you could also opt for the poke salad. For the freshest, and the most delicious treats, you have to come to the popular Suisan Fish Market.
Honoli’i Beach Park
One of Hawaii’s defining features, the beaches, are serene and picturesque. Here in Hilo, you must visit the Honoli'i Beach Park that is located north of Hilo. A haven for surfers, no matter which month you arrive in, there is always some surfing going on here at the beach. It would be a delightful experience for anyone who loves water sports. Take in the views here at the beach, and try to make it a day by picnicking with your friends and family, the experience is wholesome.
Liliʻuokalani Park and Gardens
Named after the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian kingdom, this 9.7 hectare park is known for the largest authentic ornamental Japanese garden, outside of Japan. For someone who is familiar with Japanese gardens, a walk here at Liliʻuokalani park and gardens may at times feel like you have been transported to Japan. You will find this at Banyan Drive, Hilo, and it features beautiful rock gardens, pagodas, teahouses, Japanese stone lanterns, and charming bridges with ponds underneath them.
Kahaluu Beach Park
A great destination for swimming, and snorkelling, yet another beach attraction here is the Kahaluu Beach Park. Here you will also find Hawaiian green sea turtles, also known as honu. This is mostly great for snorkelling as it has an abundant fish population. The beach park is particularly famous among families, as it is a great learning experience for children, or for anyone who is an ocean enthusiast. The beach has facilities such as showers, picnic tables, lifeguards, and food trucks.
Aloha Mondays
Who says you can only have a good time on Fridays? Aloha Mondays give you all the joys of Hawaii on a plate. Yes, it is one of the greatest culinary experiences of Hilo. Only available for pick up, and delivery, Aloha Mondays promise its patrons the best of global cuisine, with the freshest locally grown ingredients. This is a food experience that you will remember for the longest time.
