Kuan Im Temple

Breathe in the aroma of joss sticks as you step on to the front yard of this historic temple dedicated to a legendary deity in Taoist and Buddhist cultures. Kong Hock Keong Kuan Im or Guan Yin is a name originating from translations of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Kuan Im refers to the Goddess of Mercy, one of the most revered deities in East Asian Buddhism. She is believed to perceive the sounds of her disciples and is often called upon by people desiring children. The early-20th century oldest Chinese temple of Penang offers a stunning display of architecture and decoration. Its peaceful premises, located in the midst of a busy area, attract devotees from far-off lands.

Kuan Im temple commands a special place in the local heritage not only because of its patron deity, but also because one of its chief monks built another marvel, i.e., the grand Kek Lok Si temple near Penang Hill.

Tips: This temple is popularly known as Goddess of Mercy temple, so when seeking directions, use this more common name. It is situated on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, home to the majestic mosque and a Hindu temple. Given the co-existence of various religions, the street is often referred to as ‘Harmony Street’.
