Originally built as a granary to be used as a storehouse, Gol Ghar looks like a beehive from a distance. A massive structure in itself, it was built by Captain John Garstin for the British army in 1786. This move was propelled by the severe famine of 1770 that did a lot of damage. It is 105 feet tall and offers beautiful view of the entire city along with the River Ganges. The walls are about 3.6 metres thick which makes it a solid construction. There are two stairways with 141 steps winding around the dome shape of the granary by which one can reach the top to enjoy the city view. This old granary is now converted into a recreational space along with a garden in place. The Gol Ghar has an interesting trivia to it – it has never been able to fill to its optimum capacity. A design flaw in the manufacturing of the doors led to the situation where it was impossible to fill it to its capacity.
