Translated as "Drunkard's Alley" or “Alley of the Drunkards”, Nonbei Yokocho is two parallel alleys home to dozens of miniature bars. Each bar is only a few metres wide with one bar, one bartender, four stools and a narrow rickety staircase up to the second floor. Many decades ago, these bars were brothels were men would stop by for a drink as well. Now, however, the working girls have been removed and all that remains is the historic buildings.
Nonbei Yokocho is a perfect place to grab a couple pre-drinks before heading over to the clubs of Shibuya. While living in Tokyo, I stopped by here nearly every night. Amazing place to make friends, because there are no loud DJs preventing you from striking up a conversation.
