While New Orleans is often described in various epithets as to how it is related to music in general and jazz in particular, literature buffs will tell you that the city holds a special place in their heart for a plethora of literary associations. From Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams to John Grisham and a whole gamut in between, there are scores of American litterateurs who called New Orleans home. These include Somerset Maugham, William Faulkner, Anne Rice, John Kennedy Toole and George Washington Toole. From hotels where they congregated to restaurants and bars they frequented, from salons where they hung out to homes they inhabited, many of the landmarks are concentrated in the lovely French Quarter. There are many groups that offer literary walking tours and these are ideal to get a feel for the place and to hear intriguing stories and anecdotes. But if you are the kind who’d want to linger and take it at your own pace, then these ten experiences will truly offer you a glimpse of New Orleans’ influence on these literary greats.
