John Rylands Library – Even if you have no interest in books, the John Rylands Library—built in the 1890s and regarded as one of the most spectacular libraries in the world—will leave you spellbound. Home to some of the earliest books ever printed, each gallery is organised around a theme, such as faith, everyday life, science, literature, arts etc. The historic reading room continues to be a place for quiet research. Stained-glass windows give the magnificent structure the feel of a cathedral. The original Victorian toilets can be visited; unchanged since 1900, they are still in use.
