Samode Haveli: A slice of history in the heart of Rajasthan
In a state rich with regal history, the sight of havelis at regular intervals is a common occurrence in Rajasthan. Amid this abundance, many of these architectural treasures have succumbed to the ravages of time, reduced to mere echoes of their once-resplendent past. However, a rare few stand unwavering, bearing the weight of history with remarkable tenacity. The 225-year-old Samode Haveli stands as a poignant embodiment of this enduring spirit, skillfully preserving history within its walls and arches.
As one wanders through the intricate, winding corridors of Samode Haveli, it's almost as if time has stood still in some corners of this grand mansion. This haveli, with its two-century history steeped in luxury, evokes the ambiance of a cinematic masterpiece. Once exclusively reserved for the elite, it now welcomes inquisitive travelers, inviting them into a realm of enduring elegance and captivating narratives.
A rich historical connection
Samode, an expansive town in the heart of Rajasthan, boasts a storied history intertwined with illustrious zamindars. The initial chapter of Samode's recognition was written by Maharaja Rajveer Singhji, the 17th scion of the esteemed Kacchwaha Rajputs. Yet, during the era of British colonial rule, Samode was entrusted to the Nathawat clan, who held the distinguished titles of Rawal Saheb or Maha Rawal. The Rawal lineage played a pivotal role in the court of Jaipur, even ascending to the esteemed position of the state's Prime Minister. In acknowledgment of their service, they were granted a prestigious residence within the fortified city.
Walls adorned with art
Since it also serves as the ancestral residence of the royal family, the haveli's interiors have been meticulously maintained to an exceptional degree. Within its walls, a captivating narrative unfolds through a myriad of three-dimensional paintings and photographs, with origins dating back to the late 1800s, each intimately connected with Samode's rich history. The common areas are adorned with sheesham and teak wood furniture, many of which are precious antiques, including five remarkable cabinets and 15 trunks that hold a special place in the family's heritage.
Each room is unique
This haveli, transformed into an enchanting boutique hotel, exerts an irresistible allure for international travelers seeking an authentic immersion in Indian culture and warm hospitality during their sojourn. With a total of 50 rooms, each possessing its own unique character, guests are treated to a diverse and individualized experience.
The Sheesh Mahal suite at Samode Haveli draws inspiration from the opulent Sheesh Mahals at both Samode Palace and the City Palace in Jaipur. Samode Palace itself stands as another magnificent heritage gem, having evolved into one of the most sought-after venues for grand, regal-style destination weddings. The ornate murals, artistry, paintings, soothing fountains, fragrant champa and anar trees, and the expansive courtyard collectively contribute to the quintessential charm of this remarkable place.
The culinary experience
The restaurant, nestled beside the charming lotus pond and beneath the ancient banyan tree with its enigmatic aerial roots, is undeniably picturesque. It offers the perfect setting for capturing Instagram-worthy photos, both in the daytime and under the evening's gentle glow. The food is not only wholesome but also delicious. What sets this place apart is the availability of several locations where exquisite private dinners can be arranged, promising unforgettable dining experiences.
One of the most distinctive dishes served here is the Mutton Dahi Bada, a crispy mutton patty accompanied by curd, chutneys, and an array of spices. Additionally, worth mentioning is the flavorsome Junglee Mas, and, of course, their homemade ice creams.
A slice from the past
Today, Samode Haveli is a popular tourist attraction and a renowned heritage hotel. It is known not only for its historical significance but also for its hospitality, making it a prime destination for those looking to experience the regal heritage and culture of Rajasthan. The haveli also plays a role in preserving the cultural heritage of the region, offering a glimpse into the bygone era of Rajput royalty and their opulent lifestyles. Samode Haveli is a living testament to the rich history of Rajasthan, and it continues to captivate the imaginations of travelers who visit to experience its heritage, architecture, and timeless elegance.
