India, an erstwhile land of kings and queens, is dotted with a number of ancient palaces and grand forts. Some of these age-old architecture have either completely converted into well-restored heritage hotels or a section of the property has turned into one. These heritage properties are an amalgam of old-world charm and modern comforts.

Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur
Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur is among the world’s largest private residences. This splendid art deco palace is home to Jodhpur’s royal family and was constructed by Maharaja Umaid Singh between 1928 and 1943. One of the prime features of the property is its 26 ac of garden. A part of this royal sandstone structure has been converted into a luxury hotel, which features 64 rooms and suites.
The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla
Offering breathtaking views of the mighty Himalayan ranges, the Oberoi Cecil in Shimla is a sight to behold. The hotel has a rustic colonial charm that will remind you of some old English movie. The wooden floors, high ceilings, period furniture and fireplace add to the overall vibe and stately ambience.
The Imperial, Delhi
The Imperial hotel in Delhi once served as the meeting place for great political leaders such as Gandhi, Nehru, and Mountbatten. Built in 1931, the hotel’s imposing colonial architecture, rosewood furniture, decadent interiors and high ceilings will take you back to India's pre-independence era. The property also has a huge collection of original paintings created by prominent colonial artists.
Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur
A premium heritage property in the country, this hotel was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II in the 18th century as a summer palace. It is one of the most famous hotels in the country and was featured in the classic James Bond movie, Octopussy. The hotel is set right in the middle of Lake Pichola and a boat transports guests from the shore to it.
The Lalit Grand Palace, Srinagar
This luxury hotel is right in the heart of beautiful Srinagar overlooking Dal Lake. The property was built in 1910 by Maharaja Pratap Singh and served as the residence for the ruling family of Kashmir. This two-storey heritage property features pretty lawns and age-old chinar trees. There are 113 rooms and suites, and 10 cottages here.
