Hotels that are Hong Kong's pride
People visit Hong Kong for its glorious skyline, fascinating festivals, lively night markets, interesting traditions, world-class shopping experience, outstanding cuisine, dizzying peaks, lush spreads of nature and a buzz like no other in the world. For such a unique travel destination, it comes as no surprise that you’ll find equally unique places to stay; here is a list of cool and unusual hotels in Hong Kong, in no particular order. From trendy boutique hotels to enchanting hidden gems, we’ve found the most unique accommodations in Hong Kong that will make your stay anything but ordinary.
The Fleming
Based in the heart of Wanchai, this medium-sized boutique hotel stands out for its meticulously thought through concept and its strong sense of place. Drawing inspiration from the Star Ferry and unique maritime heritage, it has brass fittings and nautical-themed furnishings throughout. From light switches shaped like brass dials to ‘Clean My Room’ and ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs designed to resemble a ship’s telegraph – the attention to detail is exemplary. Even the hotel’s signature scent, a nostalgia-inducing blend of sandalwood and amber, is carefully thought through.
Attitude On Granville
Taking inspiration from both past and present Tsim Sha Tsui, Attitude on Granville is a sleek boutique hotel with a retro 1970s – 1980s art deco vibe. The theme of old and new is evident from contrasting white public housing walls, retro pay phones, vintage letterboxes and a reception desk made out of local market plastic crates with a chic modern internet corner. The 81 guest rooms are equally fun and trendy, decorated with painted wall graphics and handcrafted furniture, lending the rooms a rustic glow. The hotel strives to support local artists, share their talents and promote Hong Kong’s art, culture and heritage.
Hotel Madera
Conveniently located in the heart of Yau Ma Tei, this hotel is close to a host of tourist attractions and offers unlimited shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Hotel Madera presents a fabulously funky alternative to the typically muted tones of most other Hong Kong hotels. ‘Madera’ translates to ‘wood’ in Spanish; riding on this concept, the hotel employs a balancing architectural design in sync with the concept of natural harmony. The property also has a mini-museum that recreates aspects from Hong Kong of the 60s.
Sleeep – The Capsule Hotel
Targeted towards the young creative urban traveller, who loves design and technology, or nappers who can check in for a power nap! The Sleeep experience is centred around a capsule, called a SLPer with super-soft, comfortable bedding. When you book online, you can personalise your bed, requesting a soft or firm mattress, thick or thin blanket or a memory foam or eco-down pillow. The lighting here is customised, with a system that is designed to work with your body clock; the air supply and climate controls are also based on scientific studies to give occupants the best quality sleep possible. Sleeep is located between Queen's Road Central and Gough Street.
Hullett House
If you like to stay at interesting places, Hong Kong’s Hullett House must be on your bucket list, as the property is steeped in history. It was the former Marine Police Headquarters and dates back to 1881. Located on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in a magnificent colonial building dating back to 1881, Hullett House is a heritage hotel that provides a collection of bespoke suites that celebrate old Hong Kong. The Victorian-style colonial architecture will greet you from every corner as you walk down the corridors of this historically significant building.
