Most travellers would confidently assert that the Nordland Line, connecting Norway’s original capital Trondheim and the lesser-known northern city of Bodo, is perhaps the most scenic of all rail journeys. As wasted as the idea of taking an overnight train sounds, do not hesitate in embarking on this one, especially during the summer months because when you are in the land of the midnight sun, stunning views of the countryside will be waiting for you with open arms. The jagged fjords, alluring pine forests and lakes will not let you sleep a wink. In case you have no option but to travel during winters, the sleeping berths are usually comfortable enough for a long shut-eye. The commute, however, is a lot longer (18 hours) if you take the train from Oslo. The authorities are generous enough to provide you with free blankets, pillows, eye masks and earplugs and you can take them all home!If you want to save money, buy a ticket for a second class seat, although not as comfortable, for 50NOK. A second class sleeper with two beds and a private washing facility comes for 425NOK and you are expected to reserve the entire compartment even if you are a solo traveller.
