The most popular beverages in Asia
Asia is a gorgeous continent, globally recognised for its mouthwatering cuisine and beverages. In fact, masala chai and dalgona coffee, two of the most famous beverages in the world are also Asian! Here is a list of some of the most popular beverages from various countries in Asia.
Masala Chai, India
Masala chai, an aromatic, super-tasty and super refreshing concoction, is a hot beverage from India. The chai or tea is made by using a combination of several spices (like cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, and black peppercorns), tea leaves and milk. It is served hot with savoury food items.
Tursu Suyu, Turkey
Another popular drink in Asia is tursu suyu, which is a refreshing beverage served in Turkey. The drink is made of pickled vegetables like beets, carrots, cucumbers, peppers and garlic, to name a few. This bright pink coloured drink tastes salty and has a strong tangy kick to it.
Otoso, Japan
Otoso, also called toso, is a kind of spiced sake. It’s a traditional New Year’s Day drink, and is made using a mix of herbs, spices, and roots in sake.
Junshan, China
This is China’s most prestigious and highly prized yellow tea. An A-lister in tea variety, this beverage is exclusive to the island of Jun Shan in DongTing Lake of China. It’s pricey because it is rare and harvested under rigorous conditions.
Dalgona, South Korea
Dalgona coffee rose to fame during last year's lockdown period, thanks to social media trends. This frothy whipped coffee is served on top of hot milk. It originated in South Korea, but similar versions of the coffee are now common in several Asian countries.
Bajigur, West Java, Indonesia
Native to the Sundanese people of West Java, Indonesia, bajigur is a sweet hot beverage that carries strong flavors of ginger, sugar, and coconut milk. This traditional drink is served with savory items like boiled peanuts or sweet potato.
