Must-try Konkani delicacies in Maharashtra
Konkan, a beautiful region tucked between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, is all about stunning beaches and some delicious flavourful food. The Konkan belt stretches from Thane in Maharashtra to Mangalore in Karnataka and the Konkani dishes are highly influenced by the Goan, Maharashtrian and Karnataka cuisine.
Let’s checkout some of the delicious Konkani you must try:
Bombay Duck or Bombil
This is one of the most popular dishes served in parts of Konkan, mostly in Maharashtra. The fish dish is so popular that it is available in several of Mumbai’s renowned bars and pubs as a side dish to go with alcohol.
Bharli Vangi
Bharli vangi is basically a stuffed eggplant dish and every Konkan region has its own version. The Konkan method includes roasted peanuts to prepare curry and loads of spicy Malvani masala. In some parts of Maharashtra, they add poppy, sesame and niger seeds to the gravy while the Karwar version has a coconut-based gravy.
Mooga Mole Randayi
This is a healthy Konkani dish, which is basically a special sprouted moong dal curry. This dish is perfect for health-conscious people as it is rich in protein. Mooga mole is an important part of Konkani thalis.
Kadamb with kolombo
Kadamb and kolombo are the Konkani versions of steamed idlis and sambar and are widely popular. These two combinations make for a great breakfast option. The only difference is that kadamb is steamed in banana or turmeric leaf, and kolombo is loaded with vegetables.
Airavat
This is a special delicacy made by the Konkan people on festive occasions like weddings and birthdays. Made using jaggery, ginger, dates, and lots of tamarind, airavat has a sweet, tangy and spicy taste to it. This flavourful Konkani dish will leave you craving for more!
