Unique summer drinks in India
Summer is here! It is something to celebrate with chilled beverages in your hand. Cold, refreshing and very sippable are the only true rules for a summer drink in India. If you are going to be at these cities in India for a trip, here are some outstanding drinks you should try to beat the heat when the sun is at its peak during summer.
Pyaar Mohabbat Maza, Delhi
It is a pink milk-based drink available at vendors around the Jama Masjid and Old Delhi area. It is made by mixing milk and rooh afza rose-sugar syrup with chunks of watermelon and ice. The name of this drink spells the emotion of love is evokes when sipped by the customers. It is truly delicious and really worth every rupee spent on it.
Doodh Cola Drink, Kolkata
Imagine a cola drink mixed with milk. Yes, that’s what a dhaba in Kolkata has made one of its star beverages. The beverage prepared at Kolkata’s Balwant Singh’s Eating House may sound unbelievable but it is said to be delicious. It is made by mixing cola, sugar and ice cubes. Balwant Singh Eating House is one of the oldest dhabas in the city. Doodh Cola is served one litre in a large jar, which comes at INR 150. Their thandai, kesar chai and chocolate chai are also worth trying.
Jigarthanda, Madurai
This special summer drink of Tamil Nadu is made using almonds, sarsaparilla root, rose petals, and milk. It is originally called Jil Jil Jigarthanda which loosely means “chilled drink”. Another interesting quality of this drink is that it has aphrodisiacal nature which is why it is given to the bride and the groom during their wedding night.
Piyush, Mumbai
Invented by the owners of Tambe Arogya Bhavan, a small eatery in Mumbai by adding a bit of buttermilk to shrikhand (sweetened strained yogurt) to beat the summer heat, Piyush (meaning “ambrosia”) has become Mumbai’s one of the favourite summer coolers. It is traditionally made by whisking buttermilk in a wooden churn before the shrikhand is added, with a topping of nutmeg and saffron.
