World’s largest Hindu Temple - Temple of the Vedic Planetarium and all you need to know about it
India is no stranger to architectural wonders. Rock-cut temples, cave temples, traditionally designed temples, all these have managed to impress and inspire us for as long as one can remember. Come 2023, one more will get added to this already impressive list of architectural wonders.
The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium in Mayapur, West Bengal, is a temple currently under construction. It is slated to be ready by 2023 and when it does, it will be the world’s largest Hindu temple and also one of the tallest in the world.
The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium will be the headquarters of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). It is located approximately 130 km from Kolkata.
Let’s take a look at the things that make this temple unique.
The costs
It is one of the most expensive temple projects so far, with the amount coming to USD 100 million. The temple stands at 113m in height.
The structure
The temple will be able to accommodate 10,000 people. The structure comprises one of the largest domes in the world. The building is designed and constructed in compliance with what’s written in Bhagavata Purana. The building will symbolise the functioning of the planetary system.
Vedic connection
As per the temple authorities, the building will showcase the entire Vedic cosmology in an interactive way. This will be done so that visitors will find it easier to understand the Vedic cosmos and stories from the puranas.
New tourist attraction
The new temple will be a grand addition to the already popular Mayapur, which is also one of the holy places in India. The first shrine of ISKCON, the Chandrodaya Temple, is also located here.
Breaking records
Upon completion, the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium will be bigger than the St. Paul's Cathedral in the Vatican and the Taj Mahal in Agra!
When to visit?
The Temple of the Vedic Planetarium will open for visitors in July-August 2023
