What’s inside Karnataka’s Kali Tiger Reserve?

Before 2015, Kali Tiger Reserve, technically, did not exist. Today, what we know as the Kali Tiger Reserve was called Dandeli Anshi Tiger Reserve. And Anshi National Park was a part of this larger reserve. In 2015, Dandeli Anshi Tiger Reserve was rebranded as Kali Tiger Reserve. It is located in Uttara Kannada district, is spread over an area of 1300 sq km, and is one of the best wildlife and adventure hotspots in the state.

Kali Tiger Reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. As per reports, the reserve is home to around 40 tigers. Apart from tigers, there is a high chance of spotting leopards and elephants too. But one thing you cannot miss here is the reserve’s abundant birdlife. The birdlife includes endangered species like the Malabar pied hornbill and the Great Indian hornbill.


The reserve is traversed by the Kali river, which clearly serves as a lifeline for the region. The river not only supports the diverse ecosystem within the park, but also provides water for nearby communities and facilitates various water-based activities like river rafting and boating.

Visit the Dandeli taluk, for this is from where river rafting expeditions start. The Kali River is stunning, aggressive and beautifully perfect for rafting. At Kali Tiger Reserve, visitors can engage in activities like jungle safaris, birdwatching, nature walks, and wildlife photography. Jungle safari happens twice a day (6 AM to 8 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM).
