Up close with rhinos and tigers: The ultimate Kaziranga safari guide
Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Assam, is one of India's most remarkable wildlife destinations. Home to the world’s largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros, this biodiverse haven offers some of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in the country. Whether on foot, by boat, or atop an elephant, every moment in this park is a brush with the wild.
Jeep safari – Up-close with Assam’s Big Five
A jeep safari is the best way to explore Kaziranga’s diverse landscapes, from grasslands to wetlands. The park is famous for its "Big Five" – the one-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephant, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Early morning and late afternoon safaris provide the best chances to spot these magnificent creatures.
Elephant safari
For an immersive experience, take an elephant safari through the tall grasslands. This allows for an intimate encounter with rhinos, as elephants can get closer to them than vehicles. The safari is especially magical in the misty mornings when wildlife activity is at its peak.
Birdwatching paradise
Kaziranga is a birdwatcher’s dream, hosting over 500 species of birds, including migratory visitors like the bar-headed goose and pelicans. The wetlands attract rare species such as the Bengal florican and greater adjutant stork, making it a must-visit for birding enthusiasts.
Brahmaputra river boat safari
For a different perspective, take a boat safari along the Brahmaputra River, bordering the park. This offers a chance to spot Gangetic dolphins, water birds, and even large mammals coming to drink at the riverbanks.
Exploring the lesser-known Eastern Zone
While most visitors focus on the central and western zones, the Eastern Range (Agaratoli) is less crowded and offers incredible sightings of leopards, migratory birds, and dense forest wildlife.
Visit nearby tribal villages
Beyond the park, visiting Mishing tribal villages offers insight into the local culture, traditional stilt houses, and their harmonious coexistence with nature. Panbari village is one of the most visited villages in Kaziranga.
Best time to visit
The ideal time for wildlife experiences in Kaziranga is November to April, when the park is fully open and animal sightings are frequent. The monsoon season (May to October) leads to flooding, and the park remains closed during this period.
