Meghalaya tourism will soon witness a huge boost prior to Assembly elections in the state. K. J. Alphons, the Union Minister of State for Tourism recently announced INR 70 crore tourism package in order to expand the spiritual and religious tourism circuits in Meghalaya.The announcement comes ahead of Assembly elections in Meghalaya.
On being asked whether the package comes as a bait to catch more votes, the minister denying all the allegations said that the project could bring religious peace in Meghalaya.

A huge amount of INR 61.38 crore was approved for the construction, illumination and landscaping of the state. The amount was also allotted for building parking lots and toilets and some other facilities required severely in 37 churches.

Not only this, INR 8.61 crore more would be provided for 11 similar religious projects.
It is to be noticed that in the month of December last year, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Shillong he said, “We want to make Meghalaya a top tourism destination”. He was there to inaugurate few projects and his visit was considered as a plan to boost up the BJP’s campaign ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.
That time Modi admiring the natural splendor of the region mentioned that Meghalaya and Northeast combined was a picturesque destination and that he was extremely happy to be there. He also mentioned that to maintain the relation with Northeast he had asked his ministers to visit the region on regular basis.
