It is arguably the most beautiful square in Rome, full of gorgeous fountains and stunning baroque architecture. It wasn’t always a square though, it actually used to be a stadium in Ancient Rome that was used for mock naval battles when they would flood the entire thing. Today it is a meeting place for locals, a place where open air cafes smell of coffee and baked goods, and a place where season fairs set up shop. In the summer time expect to find plenty of entertainers including buskers, fortune tellers, and painters looking to entertain visitors. In the winter, the traditional Christmas Market is here for all of December with carousels set up and vendors selling chocolate, candy and toys. The trio of fountains are one of the main attractions here with the largest being the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, featuring four figures representing four rivers. Other great things to discover in this square include the church of Sant’Agnese, and the old ruins of the original stadium. Whether you come to marvel at the fountains, drink an espresso at the café, or simply meet with friends and hang out, this is definitely a must see in the city.
