Located about 23 kilometres away from Pahalgam, at an altitude of 3590 m, Sheshnag Lake is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Jammu and Kashmir. This green patch is over a kilometre in length and 0.7 km in width. The reflection of surrounding meadows on the crystal clear water of this oligotrophic lake further enhances its beauty. It lies en route Amarnath Cave, one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimage sites. The lake is fed by streams and mountains above it and freezes completely during winters. The lake gets its name from Sheshnag—the lord of snakes. As per legend, the lord himself dug this lake.
