If you thought that Jama Masjid was present only in Delhi, then definitely you need to think again! This mosque in Chanderi is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the state and boasts a seating capacity of 2000 people. The design of the mosque is quite conventional, featuring intricately designed pillars and walls with different geometrical patterns. It is said that this was brought from the crumbling palace of Tamarpura. Ghiyas-ud-din Balban constructed this prayer hall to commemorate the victory over Chanderi and ensured that the structure imbibed the influences of both Mughal and Chanderi heritage. The structure bears three white marble domes and unusually does not have a minar (tower) like all other mosques. The doors and entry points are adorned with beautifully carved pillars that have no significance in terms of engineering but have been used for beautification of the monument. The east wall of the mosque bears a stone slab that has Dilawar Khan Gori’s name inscribed on it. If sources are to be believed, this relic was also brought from the ruins of Tamarpura. Situated bang opposite Badal Mahal Darwaza, the structure still receives a fair amount of footfall by maulvis, religious leaders and regular people who come to pray.
