Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is a ‘treasure-house of medicines’, and hence the name. Perched above the town of Ravangla, its highest point is at Maenam. The main entry point is Ravangla, 65 km from Gangtok. The sanctuary covers an expanse of 3500 hectares and reaches an altitude of 10,600 ft above sea level. It is an abode of animals like Red Panda, Goral, Serow, Barking Deer, Marbled-Cat, Leopard-Cat, Civet-Cats, Blood Pheasant, Common Hill Partridge, Magpies, Black Eagle, and Blue necked Pita, Sunbirds and many other animals. Once you have done exploring the fauna and flora of the sanctuary, consider a visit to a Buddhist monastery called Maenam Gumpa located close-by. Towards the east of the sanctuary, a stream of water originates from a mountain, which merges into the Teesta River.
