Cinque Terre: A coastal heaven
The Cinque Terre, meaning Five Lands in Italian, is a collection of five quaint hamlets set along the coastline of the Italian Riviera. These villages are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these are noted for their natural beauty, pink-shade houses, and traditional fishing. About Riomaggiore
Beauty: The village's breathtaking beauty can be appreciated from many angles. Whether you're admiring it from the sea, where fishing boats bob gently in the harbour, or from the surrounding hiking trails that offer panoramic views, Riomaggiore is a feast for the eyes.
Colourful houses: The vibrant, pastel-coloured houses that line the streets are a hallmark of Riomaggiore and the Cinque Terre as a whole. These colourful facades add to the village's charm and make it a favourite among photographers.
Heritage: Riomaggiore's history is deeply intertwined with fishing. You can still see remnants of this heritage in the fishing boats, nets, and quaint waterfront buildings. The village also boasts a mediaeval castle, Castello di Riomaggiore, which dates back to the 13th century and offers panoramic views of the village and the sea.
Local food: Like all of Italy, Riomaggiore offers a culinary experience that is second to none. Fresh seafood, pesto, and locally produced wines are among the many delights you can savour in the village's charming restaurants and cafes.
Local festivals: Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting during one of Riomaggiore's traditional festivals. The Festa di San Giovanni Battista, celebrated in late June, is a highlight, featuring a boat procession and fireworks over the sea.
