You can end your Penang colonial tour by meeting a local hero. If Captain Francis Light is credited with founding Penang and adding it to British East India’s territories, James Richardson Logan, a Scottish, is credited with a successful campaign to end the Kolkata-based British rule over the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. In 1867, his efforts made this territory part of the Crown Colony, reporting directly to the colonial office in London. An ethnologist, explorer and a lawyer by profession, he championed for the rights of Asian communities. Two years after the administrative restructuring, he died during one of his explorations and his remains were buried in George Town.
Tips: If you walk east on Light Street from this memorial, you will return to Victoria Memorial Clock Tower and Beach Street, where you started this tour from.
