The gigantic idol of Lord Shiva at Murudeshwara is visible from a distance. This is the second tallest Shiva statue in the world (tallest one being in Nepal). It is built on Kanduka Hill, fenced by Arabian Sea on three sides. There are a series of sculptures close to the statue, telling stories from the past, and a golden chariot. These are a treat to photographers and general visitors alike, even if you’re not god fearing. Try parking your car near the statue and take a photo as if statue is sitting on the car! Murudeshwar Temple complex is fronted with a 20 storeyed tower, called Raja Gopura (king’s tower). Do climb up this 238 ft temple tower (ticket Rs 10 per head) for scenic all around view of Murudeshwara. The view is certainly worth it. The temple complex provides meals to visitors during lunch time. Adjacent to temple campus is the beach, where one can try jet ski, boat rides and other beach activities. Scuba diving is also organised at Netrani Islands, about 20 km off the Murudeshwara coast. Murudeshwara is well connected by road and several accommodation options are available.
