Sri Mahamariamman Temple

The shrine of Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia. Founded in 1873 as a private shrine of Pillai family, the temple opened its doors to public in 1920. In its earlier days it was an important place of worship for early South Indian immigrants. Now the temple is the prime place of worship for all the Hindus on the region. Boasting South Indian Temple architecture style, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The external impressive facade consists of five tiered Gopuram adorned with colourful idols of Hindu gods. The decorative statues narrate stories from Indian mythology. The temple draws thousands of Hindu devotees during Diwali and Thaipusam. The Silver Chariot inside the temple is used to transport the statue of Lord Murugan to Batu Caves during the celebrations of Thaipusam.
