Here are the six most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Uttar Pradesh.
Sarnath is one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites, as it is where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Located near Varanasi, Sarnath is home to the Dhamek Stupa, which marks the spot where Buddha preached the Dharma. The Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses an impressive collection of Buddhist artifacts, including the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is now India’s national emblem.
Sravasti
Sravasti, an ancient city, was a major centre of Buddhism during Buddha's lifetime. It is believed that Buddha spent 24 monsoon seasons here, teaching and performing miracles. The Jetavana Monastery, donated by the wealthy merchant Anathapindika, is one of the most important sites in Sravasti. Pilgrims can also visit the Ananda Bodhi Tree.
Relics of Buddha were discovered during excavations at the Kapilvastu Stupa, located 97 km north of Gorakhpur on State Highway 1A. Kapilvastu, where Lord Buddha spent the first 29 years of his life, is now being developed as an International Buddhist Pilgrimage Centre. The site features a large stupa, which yielded Buddha's relics during the archaeological excavations.

Kaushambi is another significant site associated with Buddha's teachings. It is believed that Buddha visited Kaushambi several times and delivered sermons here. The Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka, stands as a testament to the city's historical importance in Buddhism. The ruins of ancient monasteries, stupas, and fortifications provide insights into the city's past. Kaushambi's tranquil surroundings offer a conducive atmosphere for meditation and spiritual contemplation.
Sankisa
Sankisa, also known as Sankasya, is a lesser-known but important Buddhist site. According to Buddhist tradition, Sankisa is where Buddha descended from Tushita Heaven after preaching the Abhidharma to his mother. The site is marked by a stone elephant and a staircase believed to be the path Buddha took during his descent.
