Sure, everyone knows Strahov Monastery right by Prague Castle, but have you ever heard of Brevnovsky Monastery? Located just a 12-minute tram ride away from its more famous cousin, Brevnovsky Monastery is larger, older, and arguably more beautiful than Strahov Monastery, and features its own brewery and pub which is frequented by locals instead of tourists. First established in 993 by Saint Adalbert, the second Bishop of Prague, Brevnovsky Monastery was the first friary ever in Bohemia, and today remains an active Roman Catholic archabbey with monks living and praying on the premises. The serenity of its surroundings belie its tumultuous history―in 1420 the complex was nearly destroyed by the Hussite wars between reformists and the Catholic church, and in the 20th century it was seized twice―first by invading Nazi forces, then by the communist government. However, everything has been lovingly restored now. Take a peek inside the beautiful Baroque-style basilica and stay for an authentic organ concert, or wander the extensive park grounds surrounding the monastery complex, including a curious structure buried into the side of a cliff that houses art exhibitions. And make sure to try their Brevnovsky Benedict beer―in a country obsessed with beer; Brevnovsky Monastery serves up the most traditional pint of them all, allegedly being the first place to brew beer in Bohemia back in the 10th century.
