Jim Corbett’s 8 safari zones: Which one is the best for tiger sightings?
Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest and most celebrated wildlife sanctuary, offering a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers. The national park is spread across an area of 1,300 square kilometers, and is divided into eight safari zones, each with its own distinct landscape and wildlife experience. Whether you crave the thrill of the chase or a tranquil escape into nature, Jim Corbett’s diverse terrains, rich biodiversity, and unforgettable wildlife encounters make it a must-visit destination for any nature lover.
Dhikala Zone
Dhikala is the largest and most sought-after safari zone in Jim Corbett National Park. Dhikala is mostly known for its vast grasslands and breathtaking landscapes, and the star of the park - Bengal tiger. It is also home to elephants, wild boars, deer, and a variety of bird species. Unlike other zones, only Canter safaris (a 16-seater open bus) are allowed in Dhikala for day-visitors.
Bijrani Zone
Bijrani is one of the most popular zones, famous for jeep safaris and excellent tiger sightings. The zone features a mix of dense forests, open meadows, and river streams, creating the perfect habitat for diverse wildlife. The terrain is relatively dry compared to Dhikala, making it an ideal location for early morning safaris when wildlife is most active. Book your safaris in advance.
Jhirna Zone
Unlike most zones that close during the monsoon, Jhirna remains open throughout the year, making it an excellent choice for off-season wildlife lovers. The zone offers an ideal habitat for sloth bears, leopards, and tigers
Garjia Zone
The zone is named after the famous Garjia Devi Temple. Tourists visiting this zone can expect to see tigers, elephants, wild boars, and numerous bird species. Its proximity to Ramnagar makes it an easily accessible option for safari lovers.
Sitabani Buffer Zone
Sitabani is not part of the core zones of Jim Corbett but is a popular buffer zone that offers a unique safari experience. This zone is particularly famous for birdwatching, with species like the crested serpent eagle, kingfishers, and several types of woodpeckers frequently spotted.
Pakhro Zone
Pakhro is part of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the outskirts of Jim Corbett National Park. It is known for its rich elephant population, making it a great spot for those hoping to see these gentle giants. The zone also has a significant number of leopards, deer, and tigers. Pakhro is a great choice for visitors who prefer a less commercialized and peaceful wildlife adventure.
Dhela Zone
Dhela is one of the few zones that remain open throughout the year. The zone features a mix of dense forests, grasslands, and water bodies, attracting a variety of animals, including tigers, elephants, wild boars, and sloth bears.
Durga Devi Zone
Durga Devi is the most scenic safari zone in Jim Corbett. The zone is known for its hilly terrain and river streams, and is particularly famous for birdwatching, with species like the crested laughing thrush, maroon oriole, and fish eagles commonly spotted.
