Incredible pyramids from across the world that aren’t in Egypt!
If you think that you will find pyramids only in Egypt, you will need to get your facts right. Yes, you can actually go beyond Egypt's iconic pyramids and discover incredible pyramids from various corners of the world. While Egypt is famed for its ancient structures, pyramids have been built across America, Asia, and even Europe, offering a diverse array of historical wonders.
Borobudur, Indonesia
Although not a traditional pyramid, these nine stacked platforms of Borobudur, is part of the world's largest Buddhist temple, exhibit majestic Javanese Buddhist architecture. Built in the 9th century, this Indonesian marvel, influenced by Indian Gupta art, was rediscovered in 1814 after a century of abandonment. Devotees now visit this site to circumambulate clockwise along the walkways to reach the uppermost level.
Chinese Pyramids
You will be intrigued to know that many ancient Chinese emperors have been laid to rest in pyramids scattered across China, particularly around Xi’an and Luoyang. There are actually more than 200 structures in total here. These earthworks, distinct in appearance, mimic burial mounds and cleverly blend with the natural landscape through tree cover.
Great Pyramid of Cholula, Mexico
Ranking among the world's largest pyramids, the Great Pyramid of Cholula in Mexico covers an expansive 45 acres and rises approximately 53 m high. Featuring a church atop it, this pyramid was initially abandoned and later rediscovered, allowing visitors to explore its network of tunnels.
Nubian Pyramids, Sudan
Though smaller than the pyramids in Giza, Sudan's Nubian Pyramids present an impressive sight, with over 200 structures showcasing steeper designs. Serving as tombs for Nubian rulers between 300 BC and 300 AD, these pyramids bear the marks of an Italian explorer's excavation in the 1880s. Most of the pyramids have missing tops, which was the doing of an Italian explorer who, during much of the 1880s, engaged in treasure-seeking activities in this region.
Pyramid of Cestius, Rome
Built as a tomb for Roman magistrate Gaius Cestius Epulo in 12 BC, the Pyramid of Cestius in Rome stands as a testament to ancient architectural prowess. Constructed from concrete and adorned with marble, its location enhances its visual appeal, especially at night.
Pyramids of Tikal, Guatemala
Hidden in the thick rainforest of northern Guatemala, the pyramids of Tikal were erected by the Mayans between 300 and 900 AD to honor their gods. Despite abandonment and nature's reclamation, the tallest structure, Pyramid IV, remains visible through the jungle canopy.
Teotihuacan, Mexico
The ruins of Teotihuacan near Mexico City boast of multiple pyramids, including the striking Pyramid of the Sun and the captivating Pyramid of the Moon. Built with strict symbolic and geometric principles, these structures served as the heart of a powerful cultural center in Mesoamerica.
El Castillo, Belize
The 98-ft tall Chichen Itza pyramid, El Castillo, holds astronomical significance with 91 steps on each side, totaling 365 steps to represent each day of the year. During equinoxes, shadows form triangles on the north staircase, creating the illusion of a moving snake.
