The town of Gimli is popular for good reason; they hold an incredible Icelandic Festival of Manitoba every August long weekend. We highly suggest that you head to Gimli that weekend, and join the thousands of tourists that come to celebrate. Expect to see Vikings walking throughout the streets, plenty of traditional Icelandic food, a midway complete with rides and games, live music, and plenty of food and craft vendors. Throw in a sandcastle competition, a Viking battle, and kids’ competitions, and that sums up this festival. If you can’t make it to this festival in Gimli, there are plenty of other reasons to visit this town including the Gimli Film Festival, which takes place in July over 4 days. Hundreds of people attend the festival which takes place on the beach, and under the northern lights movies and films are shown to all, just make sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. With unique accommodations, independent restaurants, and the friendliest of locals, visiting here is great fun.
