Even before it shot to international fame with the 1989 Hollywood film When Harry Met Sally, this Lower East Side deli was already a New York City classic. One of the oldest Jewish delis in the city (it opened in 1888); Katz’s is much-loved for its excellent sandwiches and hand-carved meats. Its star dish is the smoky pastrami sandwich, which consists of cured and smoked beef served on rye bread. Add a dash of mustard and pickles, club it with a soda or draught beer, and you’re good to go.
