Countries with the most unusual borders!
Our world is divided into continents, states, countries, and provinces by boundaries or borders. These demarcations play a crucial role in separating cultural identities and traditions. Borders are fundamental for effective societal organisation and governance. While many borders result from linguistic or geographical distinctions, there are some with rather peculiar origins. Here are a few unusual borders that you might be unfamiliar with!
Victoria Falls: Zambia and Zimbabwe
Also known as ‘The Smoke That Thunders,’ there's a border between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the Zambezi River. Among the world's largest waterfalls, it lures tourists from across the world. The waterfall cascades from more than 100 m, creating a visible mist and offers various activities like bungee jumping, rafting, and more. It’s a must-visit natural wonder, and is a breathtaking spectacle that can be witnessed from both sides of the border.
Bir-Tawil: Egypt and Sudan
Also known as the Bir-Tawil triangle, it’s an area enclosed by Egypt to the north and Sudan to the west, east, and south. Despite its four corners, this land is often overlooked by both countries due to its lack of challenging terrain, and resources. As a result, no one claims ownership of this territory. In a historical border-drawing process involving the UK and Egypt, Bir-Tawil was included in the first border but omitted in the second. Interestingly, travellers have playfully planted flags in this undesirable region, asserting it as their own.
Haskell Library and Opera House: United States and Canada
The Quebec, Vermont, Canada, and United States border is unique due to the intentional placement of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House. It was deliberately built on the border to offer cultural and intellectual enrichment to both sides. The library's entrance is in the United States, but all its books are in Canada. Performers are in Canada, while the audience are stationed in the US, and the reading room is international territory. It's indeed a remarkable border.
Hotel Arbez: France and Switzerland
It’s an extraordinary establishment positioned on the border of France and Switzerland. The hotel is uniquely divided, as one half is in Switzerland, while the other is in France. This distinctive setup enables guests to seamlessly explore both countries without leaving the hotel's confines. The hotel's exceptional border location caters to travellers seeking a memorable and distinctive experience. Additionally, it harmoniously combines Swiss and French cultures, providing visitors with an immersive and enriching stay.
Iguazu Falls: Argentina and Brazil
With more than 270 waterfalls on the Iguazu River, it’s famed for its stunning beauty. It straddles the border of Brazil and Argentina, with The Devil's Throat being the most famous waterfall, which is an 82 m high and 150 m wide U-shaped chasm. The falls are surrounded by lush subtropical rainforests, attracting both adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. Tourists can view the falls from various points on both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides, take boat trips, and also stroll along elevated pathways on the Argentinean side for panoramic views.
The Korean DMZ: North and South Korea
The Korean Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, is a narrow strip near the 38th Parallel North that separates North and South Korea. Established at the end of the Korean War in 1953, it's a neutral zone stretching approximately 240 km across the peninsula. Despite its demilitarised status, the Korean DMZ is an unusual and poignant border because the war never officially ended, and a ceasefire persists to this day.
San Diego-Tijuana: United States and Mexico
The San Diego-Tijuana region, straddling the U.S.-Mexico border, is a prominent bi-national metropolis with nearly 5 million residents in 2012, making it the largest cross-border area. While the border has checkpoints and fences like any international boundary, what distinguishes this region is that people can freely interact and communicate through the fence, fostering a vibrant and convivial environment.
