Chasing the Northern Lights: 5 best spots in Europe
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are undoubtedly one of nature’s most mesmerising spectacles, and a sight to behold. If you haven’t seen this phenomenon before, and are eager to witness it once, Europe has some of the best vantage points. From the far north to the Arctic Circle, here are five of the best spots in Europe to chase the Northern Lights.
Tromsø, Norway
Located above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic.’ This vibrant city offers one of the best chances to see the Northern Lights, thanks to its location in the auroral oval. The lights are visible from late September to April, and the surrounding landscapes, including fjords and snow-capped peaks, provide a stunning backdrop. Tromsø also offers various Northern Lights tours, including husky safaris and boat trips.
Reykjavik, Iceland
The capital of Iceland is an excellent starting point for Northern Lights exploration. Although there are many opportunities to see the aurora in Reykjavik, the surrounding wildness frequently provides the best views. There are gloomy areas free of light pollution only a short drive from the metropolis. The Northern Lights are incredibly stunning in Iceland's breathtaking scenery, whether viewed from a remote hilltop or a geothermal hot spring.
Abisko National Park, Sweden
Swedish Lapland's Abisko National Park is well known for its pristine sky and consistent aurora sightings. A unique experience is provided by the Abisko Sky Station, where visitors may comfortably see the Northern Lights while sipping warm beverages. From late September to March, the park is the best place to see the aurora because of its remote position and low levels of light pollution.
Rovaniemi, Finland
Known as the "official home of Santa Claus," Rovaniemi is not only famous for Christmas cheer but also for its incredible Northern Lights displays. Situated just below the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi offers a chance to see the aurora from cozy glass igloos or traditional log cabins. Visitors can also engage in activities like reindeer safaris and snowshoeing, making it an ideal spot for families.
Lofoten Islands, Norway
For those looking for the Northern Lights, the Lofoten Islands provide a distinctive, off-the-beaten-path experience. The islands, which are renowned for their untamed beauty, have gloomy skies that are perfect for seeing auroras. As the Northern Lights dance overhead, Lofoten's fishing communities and breathtaking scenery—including high peaks and beaches—make for an outstanding backdrop.
