London like you've never seen before

A relatively recent but hugely popular tourist attraction in the city, the London Eye is a giant observation wheel located along the South Bank. Rising 135 metres high, it was built to mark the city’s millennium celebrations. Designed by a husband-wife team comprising David Marks and Julia Barfield, the project was the winning entry at a competition to design a landmark for the new millennium.

A major railway and underground station in central London, the Liverpool Street Underground Station intersects with the Circle Line, the Hammersmith & City Line and the Metropolitan Line. Close to several tourist attractions like the Spitalfields Market, Whitechapel Gallery and The Bank of England, there are also plenty of good hotels in the vicinity.

After several reconstructions, the present day St. Paul’s Cathedral boasts the second largest dome in Europe after St. Peter’s in Rome. It is the only domed cathedral in the whole of England. Rising to a height of 111 meters and weighing about 66,000 tons, it takes eight arches to support this mammoth structure, which is crowned by a large lantern weighing an additional 850 tons.

Also known as London Marylebone, this central London railway terminus and Underground complex stands halfway between the mainline stations at Euston and Paddington. Originally the London terminus of the former Great Central Main Line to Sheffield and Manchester, it is today the terminus of the Chiltern Main Line route to Birmingham. This is the youngest and one of the smallest of London's mainline terminal stations.

London is home to several famous churches, chapels and cathedrals, with a density that is unmatched anywhere else in England. Not only do these structures serve as peaceful places of worship for the city’s Christian population, they are also a huge part of its rich architectural heritage. Totalling approximately 50 in number, these churches provide all the regular services, and many even offer additional musical programmes.

This photo was taken by the photographer from the castle walls at the Tower Of London. Taken on a cold and rainy day in winter, it offered the rare opportunity to capture the grounds free of the usual throng of tourists. Also in the frame, is the courtyard and the buildings surrounding the White Castle.

The Tower Bridge in London, is inarguably one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. Showcasing a Victorian Gothic style of architecture, the bridge too has been designed in harmony with the nearby Tower of London, to abide by the city’s laws at the time. Within, it houses the Tower Bridge Exhibition, where visitors can observe the Victorian engine room that controls the mechanics of the bridge, which opens and rises at the centre to allow large boat traffic to pass.
