6 places in India famous for scenic ropeways
India’s ropeways are not just modes of transport; they offer breathtaking aerial views of the country’s most spectacular landscapes. Don’t believe us? Check the ones we have listed here. From the Himalayan heights of Gulmarg and Auli to the spiritual riverbanks of Haridwar and the misty waterfalls of Jabalpur, each ropeway presents a unique experience. If you are into photography, these scenic cable cars provide unforgettable panoramic vistas that you can’t get any other way.
Gulmarg Gondola, Jammu and Kashmir
Among the highest and longest cable cars in the world, the Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage ropeway that offers unparalleled views of the Pir Panjal range. The first phase takes visitors from Gulmarg (2,650m) to Kongdoori Station (3,080m), while the second phase extends up to Apharwat Peak (3,950m), where snow remains for most of the year. The ride offers panoramic views of dense pine forests, lush meadows, and snow-capped peaks.
Auli Ropeway, Uttarakhand
Often compared to the ropeways of Switzerland, the Auli Ropeway connects Joshimath to the stunning hill station of Auli, covering a distance of 4 km at an altitude of 3,010m. As one of the longest ropeways in India, it provides breathtaking views of the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Dronagiri peaks.
Gangtok Ropeway, Sikkim
This 1 km-long cable car ride is one of the top attractions in Sikkim’s capital. The Gangtok Ropeway starts from Deorali, passing through Namnang, and ends at Tashiling, near the state secretariat. Enjoy the views of rolling green hills, colorful monasteries, and the shimmering Teesta River flowing below. On a clear day, you can even spot the majestic Kanchenjunga Peak in the distance.
Haridwar Ropeway, Uttarakhand
Haridwar offers two famous ropeway rides: Mansa Devi Ropeway that takes pilgrims to Mansa Devi Temple, perched on Bilwa Parvat, and Chandi Devi Ropeway that carries visitors to Chandi Devi Temple, located atop Neel Parvat. Both ropeways not only offer convenience for devotees but also an opportunity to soak in the spiritual and natural beauty of Haridwar.
Darjeeling Ropeway, West Bengal
Also known as the Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car, the Darjeeling Ropeway is among the most scenic in India. It starts from Singamari, traveling 8 km over tea gardens, forests, and waterfalls, offering breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga range. The ride descends to Tukvar Valley, where passengers can witness workers plucking fresh tea leaves in the sprawling Darjeeling tea estates.
Dhuandhar Ropeway, Madhya Pradesh
If you are planning to visit the two magnificent national parks in Madhya Pradesh - Kanha and Bandhavgarh, make a quick stopover at Jabalpur. The town might be small in size, but when it comes to experiences, it will take your breath away. The Dhuandhar Ropeway offers stunning aerial views of the Dhuandhar Waterfalls and the Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat in Jabalpur. The scene down below is just spectacular.
