Marked by several shrines, a flurry of colourful prayer flags and ringing notes from numerous devotional bells—Observatory Hill is Darjeeling’s most ancient and sacred site. The hill was home to the original Dorje Ling monastery that gave the town its name. After being destroyed by the Nepalese back in 19th century, the hill now houses a Mahakala temple inside a small cave. A path leading up to the hill, passes through giant Japanese cedar trees and starts at about 300 m along Bhanu Bhakta Sarani from Chowrasta. While you’re there, do watch out for prowling monkeys.
