Makaibari Tea Estate, the producer of Darjeeling’s costliest tea, was established in 1859—making it one of the oldest family-owned tea gardens in Darjeeling. Located at Kurseong, the land of the white orchid, the tea estate offers a peek into the daily life of plantation workers with numerous home stays. Local families at the estate have opened up their homes to visitors providing them with simple accommodation and hearty meals. With 70 percent of its entire area still under forest cover, the eco-diversity at Makaibari is astonishing. The dense forests of the estate house numerous species of flora and fauna and visitors can explore the estate through activities like tea plucking, tea tasting or scaling the slopes where the tea grows.
