Set on a breathtaking outcrop, Bhutia Busty Gompa is one of Darjeeling’s most revered attractions and for good reason—it currently holds the original copy of the famous Tibetan Book of the Dead. The temple was originally constructed on Observatory Hill but was rebuilt, piece by piece, in its current location by the Chogyals of Sikkim in the 19th century. Set against the mighty Kanchenjunga, Bhutia Busty Gompa is home to stunning murals that depict the life and journey of Buddha. The spectacular view of the rising sun and sacred monasteries make the gompa a favourite with tourists and locals alike.
