If there is one focal point of everyday life in Lima, it is Plaza Mayor. The Central Square, in many ways, defines the very city of Lima. To tourists, it offers the perfect introduction to the rhythm of life in this iconic Peruvian city. In fact, we would go so far as to say if you have one day in the city of Lima, make sure you spend it at Plaza Mayor.

The Plaza is famed to be the point of origin of the city of Lima. It’s hard to miss the large fountain and the imposing statue of Francisco Pizarro in the middle of the square. The statue pays homage to Pizarro because he has frequently been touted as the founding father of Lima. The entire area is lined with trees and is pedestrianized for tourists’ convenience.

One of our favourite things to do at the Plaza Mayor is to explore the gems of Colonial architecture. The bright yellow colonial buildings lining the square make for perfect photographs with a distinctive South American background. The ritualistic Change of the Guard ceremony takes place at noon and is deemed extremely attractive for tourists. Expect a show of South American splendour and colourful costumes. Tourist descent in hordes for the ceremony, so make sure you come early.
