Beijing, earlier known as Peking, is the capital and the second largest city in China, after Shanghai. Characterised by its vastness, it is also one of the most populated cities in the world. Despite its relentless modernity, the city remains rooted in its historical past. Beijing was one of the four ancient capitals of China (literally meaning the northern capital). It has been the political centre for over 800 years. The history of Beijing unfolded at its centre in the Forbidden City, with Chinese imperialism wielding power through its closed doors. The Great Wall was erected to protect the territory and the capital from Mongols and Tartars. Today, the downtown Beijing exists in harmony with its ancient past. There are several things to do in Beijing, which attracts tourists not only from the country but from all over the world, making it one of the most crowded tourist places on the planet. The city is known for its beautiful ancient temples, stunning imperial gardens, quaint courtyard houses, buzzing streets, overcrowded markets and sleek downtown areas. Whether you are on an official short visit or travelling with family, Beijing has a lot on offer for every traveller!
