Hauntingly beautiful and extremely picturesque, the Lake District or Lakeland, as it is commonly known, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England. A mountainous region in the north western corner of the country, it is characterised by scenic lakes, lush green forests and mystic hills. Coupled with farmlands, idyllic villages and heritage houses, this unique region is the epitome of beauty and tranquility. Most of the area has been designated as the Lake District National Park in 1951 and is the most visited national park in the United Kingdom. Apart from scenic beauty, the region is famous for its rich literary heritage and is closely associated with English literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. Renowned authors like William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Robert Southey and W. G. Collingwood found inspiration in the captivating environs of the Lake District.
