Chidambaram is named after the famous, beautifully-carved 11th-century Nataraj Temple which is dedicated to the dancing form of Lord Shiva, known as Nataraja. The main temple is housed inside a huge 40 acre complex, which looks stunning. A look at the sculptures and gopurams will tell you the story of fine work done by the artisans of a bygone era. The entire temple complex including its exterior is a beautiful example of the art and architecture of the Chola dynasty. One can reach Chidambaram from Chennai in around 5 to 6 hours as the distance between the two cities is around 250 km. For those looking for a weekend getaway from Chennai, Chidambaram is the best option with its myriad stunning temples and its rich cultural heritage. Besides Nataraj Temple, Pichavaram Mangrove Forest, Thillai Kali Amman Temple and Manikavasagar Koyi are also a must-visit in Chidambaram.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
