Although perhaps not the prettiest of cathedrals in the city, it is an important landmark. An eternal flame burns outside in honour of General Jose de San Martin – his elaborate marble mausoleum is inside – who was a hero of the independence and founding father.
The interiors are more impressive. Walk through the sombre and cool chambers, and admire the Venetian mosaic tiles and statue of Christ carved from the wood of a carob tree.
